Dear Hebron Families and Educators,

Welcome to the 2021-2022 School Year! We are so excited to begin school next week. This year we will focus on maintaining a safe in-person learning environment, continuing our implementation of Social Emotional Learning with the Choose Love program, and expanding our academic support and enrichment programs. We will be sharing more information about our programs this year with a monthly newsletter. For now, we want to focus on updates to our operations plan. Please find many important updates below.

We have updated our COVID Operations and Distance Learning Plan using the Updated Guidance for the Use of Mitigation Strategies in Connecticut’s PreK-12 Schools released late last week by the Connecticut State Department of Education. Please note that universal mask wearing continues to be required by the state until at least September 30th. Our plan was updated using the guidance provided by the state and through our reflection of how well mitigations strategies worked last year. Here is a summary of the changes:

  • All staff must be vaccinated by September 27th or participate in weekly COVID-19 screening testing.
  • Fully vaccinated staff and students will not quarantine so long as they remain symptom free.
  • We will communicate out cases where contact tracing is needed with those who are directly impacted by a case. We will no longer send out district-wide communications of cases. All confirmed cases will be reflected on the district COVID-19 Dashboard found on our website.
  • Art, Library Media, Spanish and STEAM classes will return to the Art, Library, Spanish, and STEAM classrooms and will remain on a weekly rotation.
  • We no longer require daily temperature screenings.
  • Desk shields and plexiglass will be reserved for use in locations where students from different cohorts may have instruction together and shared/public spaces.
  • Outside community groups may use our school facilities after hours as capacity allows so long as they follow all safety measures.
  • Breakfast and lunch will be consumed in the cafeteria on a rotating schedule with appropriate social distance space, outside when possible, and in classrooms as needed.

As noted above, universal mask wearing is required at this time. We anticipate the Connecticut Department of Education and/or the Department of Public Health will publish updated guidance before the executive orders expire on September 30th. If new guidance allows for local decisions regarding universal masking, the Board of Education will hold a special meeting to discuss the issue and we will let families know of the meeting in advance. For more information on this topic, please refer to our communication sent on August 9th.

No district is able to offer distance learning as an option this year due to a new state law. We are able to continue to use distance learning when students need to quarantine or if forced to close for in-person learning as we did last year. We are no longer permitted to use distance learning on a “snow day” or other weather related closure day under existing state law.

As a reminder, families should not send a child to school if the child is sick or had contact with someone who is either presumed or confirmed positive for COVID-19. If you are awaiting COVID-19 test results due to illness or contact with others, you must wait until these test results are in before sending your children to school. When in doubt, keep children at home and contact the school health office. Continue using the GHSnurse@hebron.k12.ct.us and HESnurse@hebron.k12.ct.us email addresses to communicate directly with our nurses. You can also use our after-hours email address COVID@hebron.k12.ct.us to reach our team.

In closing, we are so excited to see you all next week. Although this year may continue to bring us challenges, we are confident our amazing students and staff will continue to persevere.  As always, we appreciate your patience and partnership as we work through any challenges that may arise. The Board welcomes feedback and you may write to them at BOE@hebron.k12.ct.us. Likewise, the District welcomes your feedback and you can write to us at COVID@hebron.k12.ct.us. We will continue to send any updates to you promptly. Please also be on the lookout for your weekly updates from Principals Larkin and Uriano.

In partnership,

Thomas J. Baird, EdD
